To deliver quality care, healthcare providers need up-to-date, comprehensive and reliable information about their patients. PharmaPartners has been contributing to this for forty years now as the trusted ICT partner of collaborating general practitioners and pharmacists. Because a growing number of people are being treated by both a medical specialist in a hospital and by their GP, it is important that they share all relevant patient information. PharmaPartners Huisartsenzorg and VANAD Enovation make this possible by linking Medicom, the information system for GPs, and hospital systems. The GP is the linking pin in the provision of care ‘close to home’. To be able to offer patients the best possible guidance on their care journey, it is important for all healthcare providers treating a patient to exchange information reliably. “The collaboration between GPs and hospitals works differently in every care region. As one of the market leaders in primary care ICT, our mission is to support all forms of collaboration as effectively as possible. We do that using our own care systems and e‑health applications as well as through smart connections with other platforms and systems”, says Piet Hein Knoop, Innovation Manager at PharmaPartners Huisartsenzorg.Step forwardEnabling access to hospital information for GPs is a major step forward. While the sharing of referral information has been possible for some time, in most regions GPs do not have direct access to, for instance, bloodwork, X-rays and other diagnostic imaging ordered by a specialist. PharmaPartners Huisartsenzorg and VANAD Enovation will now work together to change this at the national level. Allow systems to ‘converse’“GPs can already use our ZorgMail service to receive the results of hospital examinations and tests. To complement that, we will create a so-called XDS link with Medicom to enable data exchange. The GP information system will then be able to ‘converse’ with the hospital information system, allowing the GP to retrieve hospital-generated information, directly from the patient record in Medicom”, explains Marcel van der Velden, Sales Vice President at VANAD Enovation. The exchange will be facilitated via a platform by VANAD Enovation (xdsConnect), which every hospital and healthcare practice can be linked to using the international XDS standard. “All hospital information systems in the Netherlands use it. It doesn’t matter which hospital information system or specific XDS platform is being used. Medicom is the first GP information system to implement direct communication via XDS.”Personalized treatmentThe retrieval feature for GPs in Medicom will be made available in the near future. “After that, we want to make it possible for hospital specialists to retrieve relevant information from GP patient records. When medical specialists also have relevant and up-to-date patient information from GPs at their disposal via the Medicom-xdsConnect link, they can offer patients a more personalized and effective treatment, which helps to prevent ineffective care options and unnecessary costs”, says Dorinda van Oosten, general manager of PharmaPartners Huisartsenzorg. Of course, the information exchange will only take place with the patient’s permission and is fully compliant with relevant laws.About PharmaPartnersPharmaPartners has been delivering integrated care systems to collaborating healthcare providers and patients for 40 years now, providing access to reliable, up‑to‑date and comprehensive (patient) information.
